North Sails |
|
The good folks at
North Sails are striving to keep you out front with the latest in sail design, cloth
properties, and as always, quality. Their commitment to the sailing community is
clear when you see how each sail is given their specifc attention to make it the very
best. A good example of this is their latest Roller
Furling Genoas. The new line of sails is lighter, stronger and longer lasting, with
significantly improved shape when partially furled. It is worth checking out along with
all the other fine sails that come from the talented people at North Sails. |

1D35 Debut at the
Nantucket Gold Regatta
by Andreas Josenhans (PRG Special Projects Coordinator)
The 1D35 class made its one-design debut at the Nantucket Gold Regatta in Newport,
Rhode Island on May 29-31. I was fortunate enough to be aboard the winning boat,
HEARTBREAKER, owned by Robert Hughes. He had his J/35 and Melges 24 crew members
with him, and they did a super job handling this great new boat. With a North 3DL
upwind inventory and Gradient Series spinnakers, HEARTBREAKER performed well both upwind
and downwind.
Also sporting our newly designed and perfected 3DL sails for the 1D35 was John
Fisher's JAZZ. She was quickly brought up to speed by Dan Neri using only the printed
North tuning guide. If not for a navigational error, JAZZ would have won the regatta, but
with a DSQ finished a close third. RUMOURS, owned by Tim Woodhouse, was second with
Hank Bernbaums' CHINA CLOUD turning in a fourth. Seven races were sailed with the wind
ranging from 5-25 knots.
The day before the regatta North Sails sponsored tuning and sailing sessions at North
Sails Rhode Island. Owners, crews and prospective 1D35 clients were on hand
for the Chalk Talks complete with photos of the new sail designs. The rest of the
day was spent sailing. Everyone got a chance to hop in a powerboat and look at the sails
from off the boat.
North "coaches" for the day were Ken Read, Dan Neri, Bill Fortenberry,
David Hirsch, Henry Little and I. The 1D35 is a great boat and North has once again
designed the fastest sails! |

Alcott Wins Queen's Cup!
Bill Alcott's EQUATION won the Great Lakes 70 class in the 60th running of
South Shore Yacht Club's Queen's Cup held June 26, 1998.
The 72 mile fresh water classic runs from Milwaukee, WI due east across Lake Michigan
to Grand Haven, MI and was sailed in mostly a 4-6 knot east-south-easterly, making it a
light air upwind boat speed night fighting battle for the 198 registered yachts.
A traditional twilight start and night racing always seem to give a unique twist to the
race. This year was no different. At sunrise, a 20 minute wind line measuring
wind speeds of 45 knots got EQUATION up to 25 knots under 3DL main alone in flat
water.
With 3DL upwind sails and spinnakers, EQUATION was first to finish and corrected
14 minutes over second place CYNOSURE, the Santa Cruz 70 owned by Terry Kohler of
Sheboygan, WI. This puts EQUATION and CYNOSURE in a tie for first
place in the seven regatta GL70 Great Lakes Championship after last weekend's victory in
the Chicago NOOD by CYNOSURE.
The four remaining regattas in the series are the Bayview Mackinac July 11, Chicago
Mackinac July 18, Bay Harbor Yacht Club Series, Petosky, MI July 23-24, Milwaukee Grand
Prix Aug. 1-2 and the Verve Cup out of Chicago Yacht Club Aug. 14-16. |
